How Long Does a Pickleball Game Last? Games, Matches and Tournaments

Typical times for games to 11, 15 and 21, best 2 of 3 matches and tournament days, what the rulebook allows for breaks, and how many games fit in your court time.

A recreational doubles game of pickleball to 11 usually lasts about 15 to 25 minutes, and a best 2 of 3 match usually takes 30 to 75 minutes. Rally scoring and short games finish faster; evenly matched teams, long rallies and games to 15 or 21 take longer. There's no clock in standard pickleball, so these are estimates, not limits.

Those ranges come from published guides and tournament scheduling numbers, not a stopwatch study, and sources disagree at the edges. Here's what moves the number and how to plan court time around it.

How long does a pickleball game take?

The most common published range for a rec doubles game to 11 with side-out scoring is 15 to 25 minutes. One widely read game-length guide gives that range, puts rec singles to 11 at about 12 to 18 minutes and rally scoring games to 11 at about 8 to 14 minutes. Those are the guide's estimates; it doesn't cite timing data behind them.

Our 8-player round robin guide uses a narrower planning figure: around 15 to 20 minutes for a doubles game to 11, plus a couple of minutes to switch courts. That works for most rec groups. If yours plays long dink battles, plan toward the top of the range.

How long does a pickleball game to 11 last? What changes it

Five things decide whether your game is quick or a long grind.

Points to win: 11, 15 or 21

Most rec games go to 11. Tournaments also use one game to 15 or 21 (Rule 15.C.1 in the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook). More points means more rallies, so a game to 15 runs longer than a game to 11, and a side-out game to 21 longer still.

Win by 2

Sanctioned scoring formats are win by two points (Rule 15.C), and most rec groups play it the same way. A game tied at 10-10 can run on to 14-12 or 16-14.

Side-out vs rally scoring

In standard side-out scoring, only the serving team can score (Rule 4.A), so every rally the receivers win just takes the serve back. In rally scoring, a provisional option in the rulebook (Rule 14.A), every rally scores a point (Rule 14.A.2) and doubles teams get one server per side out instead of two (Rule 14.A.5). A rally scoring game to 11 finishes noticeably faster, which is why groups with a line waiting like it. The pickleball scoring guide explains both systems.

Singles vs doubles

The same guide estimates singles games a little shorter than doubles; there's one server per side out instead of two. They're more tiring per minute, though. Our pickleball singles rules guide covers the format.

Skill level

Newer players have short rallies but trade lots of side outs without scoring; stronger players keep the ball in play longer. What matters most is how close the teams are: a lopsided game ends quickly, while two even teams can trade side outs for a long time.

Pickleball game length by format

These are estimates from the sources in each row, for planning, not promises.

Format Typical length Where the estimate comes from
Doubles, side-out to 11 About 15 to 25 minutes Game-length guide; our round robin post plans on 15 to 20
Singles, side-out to 11 About 12 to 18 minutes Same guide
Rally scoring to 11 About 8 to 14 minutes Same guide
One game to 15 (tournament) About 30 minutes on average A tournament director's scheduling write-up
Best 2 of 3 games to 11 About 30 to 75 minutes; one event averaged about 50 Guide (range) and scheduling write-up (average)
Timed game Whatever you set, often 8 to 15 minutes Our round robin and king of the court guides

Tournament figures sit at the upper end: opponents are closer in skill, time-outs and breaks add minutes, and nobody hurries to get the next foursome on.

How long does a pickleball match last?

A match is one game, best 2 of 3, or best 3 of 5. In sanctioned play, the standard options are best 2 of 3 or best 3 of 5 games to 11, one game to 15 or 21, or one game to 11 for round robins with six or more teams (Rule 15.C.1). Rally scoring formats, where the tournament director allows them, use the same match lengths to 11, 15 or 21 (Rule 15.C.2).

Best 2 of 3 to 11 is the format most people mean, and published estimates put it at about 30 to 75 minutes. The director of the amateur tournament at the Beer City Open writes that this format runs about 50 minutes on average, roughly one match per court per hour, and one game to 15 closer to 30 minutes. For the schedule, they add walking time and at least 5 minutes of warm-up on top.

The spread is wide because a 2 of 3 match is either two games or three.

What the rulebook allows for time-outs and breaks

In refereed and sanctioned play, Section 21 of the 2026 rulebook sets the breaks. These are maximums, and in rec play most groups use far less.

Break What the rule allows Rule
Standard time-outs Two per player or team in a game to 11 or 15; three in a game to 21 21.A
Length of a standard time-out Up to 1 minute each 21.A.5
End change during a single game or tie-breaker game At 6 in a game to 11, 8 in a game to 15, 11 in a game to 21; up to 1 minute 21.B.1 to 21.B.3, 21.B.5
Time between games of a match Up to 2 minutes, and players change ends 21.F.1, 21.F.2
Time between matches 10 minutes, unless all players agree to start early 21.G
Medical time-out Up to 15 minutes, one per player per match 21.C.3, 21.C.6

Here's what that adds up to at most in a best 2 of 3 match to 11 that goes three games, if both teams use every standard time-out:

  • Time-outs: 2 per team × 2 teams = 4 per game, × 1 minute = 4 minutes per game. Over three games, 12 minutes.
  • Breaks between games: 2 breaks × 2 minutes = 4 minutes.
  • End change in the third game at 6 points: 1 minute.
  • Total: 12 + 4 + 1 = 17 minutes of allowed breaks, on top of the playing time.

Most matches use a fraction of that, but it explains why tournament matches run longer than park games.

How many pickleball games in an hour?

For rec doubles to 11, plan on 2 or 3 games per hour on a court. Here's the math, using the 15 to 20 minute game from our round robin post plus 2 minutes to switch:

  • A quick game: 15 + 2 = 17 minutes per game.
  • A slower game: 20 + 2 = 22 minutes per game.

Divide your court time by those numbers and round down to full games:

Court time Quick games (17 min each) Slower games (22 min each) Timed 12-minute games (14 min with switch)
60 minutes 3 (60 ÷ 17 = 3.5) 2 (60 ÷ 22 = 2.7) 4 (60 ÷ 14 = 4.3)
90 minutes 5 (90 ÷ 17 = 5.3) 4 (90 ÷ 22 = 4.1) 6 (90 ÷ 14 = 6.4)
120 minutes 7 (120 ÷ 17 = 7.1) 5 (120 ÷ 22 = 5.5) 8 (120 ÷ 14 = 8.6)

These are games per court, not per player. If more than four people share a court, you'll sit some games. With eight players rotating on one court, each player plays about every other game, so halve the numbers. With five players on one court, each player sits one game in five.

Timed games for groups

With a hard stop or several courts rotating together, play timed games: set a timer, and whoever is ahead when it goes off wins (agree beforehand how to break a tie). Every court finishes together, so nobody waits on the slow court. Our king of the court guide uses timed games of about 8 to 12 minutes for multi-court ladders, and shorter games (to 7, or rally scoring) when a line is waiting.

How long does a pickleball tournament last?

A local tournament often fills most of a day; bigger events spread divisions over several days. The length comes down to three numbers: matches, courts and the length of a match slot. Take a pool of 5 doubles teams on 2 courts:

  • A full round robin is 5 × 4 ÷ 2 = 10 matches. Each team plays 4.
  • With 5 teams, two matches can run at once and one team sits out each round, so it takes 5 rounds.
  • Matches are best 2 of 3 to 11 at about 50 minutes, plus about 10 minutes for warm-up and walking (our assumption, from that director's 5-minute warm-up plus walking time), so a 60-minute slot.
  • 5 rounds × 60 minutes = about 5 hours for pool play, before any playoff.

Switch the same pool to one game to 15 at about 30 minutes, plus the same 10 minutes, and each slot is about 40 minutes: 5 × 40 = 200 minutes, about 3 hours 20 minutes.

As a player, the rulebook allows 10 minutes between matches (Rule 21.G), and you must report within 10 minutes after your match is called (Rule 18.F). Expect longer gaps, because schedules slip. If it's your first event, our first pickleball tournament tips cover how to pace the day. If you're the organizer, the guide to running a pickleball tournament works backward from match count to hours, with tables for 1, 2 and 4 courts.

How long should you play pickleball?

As long as you can keep moving well. A game to 11 is short enough to fit several into a session. A few habits help:

  • Warm up first. A few minutes of easy dinking and movement before the first game.
  • Sit out a game when you need to.
  • Drink water between games, not just at the end.
  • Stop while you still have good footwork. Late-session games are when people get sloppy and lunge.

If you have a health condition, talk to your doctor about how much activity is right for you.

Keeping your court time moving

Most lost court time is between games: sorting out who's up next and re-checking the score.

Pickleball Plus Games keeps a live score on your phone or Apple Watch, singles or doubles, side-out or rally scoring, so nobody stops play to argue about whether it's 7 or 8. Sessions run the rotation for open play: Paddle stack sends four off and four on in queue order, Winners stay lets champions hold the court with a win cap so nobody camps there, and Mixer draws random foursomes each round. For events, Tournaments run single elimination, double elimination or round robin brackets, with best of 1, 3 or 5 matches.

FAQ

How long does a pickleball game to 11 last?

About 15 to 25 minutes for rec doubles with side-out scoring, by published estimates. Our round robin guide plans on 15 to 20 minutes plus a couple to switch courts. Close scores and win by 2 push it longer.

How many games are in a pickleball match?

A match can be one game, best 2 of 3, or best 3 of 5. In sanctioned tournaments, the standard options are best 2 of 3 or best 3 of 5 games to 11, one game to 15 or 21, or one game to 11 for round robins with six or more teams (Rule 15.C.1). Rec play is usually just single games.

How long does a best 2 of 3 pickleball match last?

Published estimates put it at about 30 to 75 minutes. One tournament director plans on about 50 minutes on average, plus warm-up and walking time.

How many pickleball games can you play in an hour?

On one court, plan on 2 or 3 doubles games to 11 in an hour, based on 15 to 20 minutes per game plus 2 minutes to switch. Timed 12-minute games fit 4 in an hour. If more than four players share the court, each player gets fewer games.

How long is a time-out in pickleball?

Up to 1 minute. Each player or team gets two standard time-outs in a game to 11 or 15 and three in a game to 21 (Rules 21.A and 21.A.5). Between games of a match, players get up to 2 minutes (Rule 21.F.1).

Is rally scoring faster than side-out scoring?

Yes, for the same target score. In rally scoring every rally scores a point, while in side-out scoring only the serving team can score. A game-length guide puts a rally scoring game to 11 at about 8 to 14 minutes, compared with 15 to 25 for side-out.

How long does a pickleball tournament last?

A local tournament often takes most of a day. For a single pool, multiply rounds by the match slot: 5 teams on 2 courts playing best 2 of 3 to 11 is 5 rounds at about an hour each, before playoffs.
