Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone)
The 7-foot zone on each side of the net where volleys are not allowed.
Baseline
The back line of the court, 22 feet from the net.
Transition Zone
The area between the baseline and the kitchen line — also called no-man's land.
Centerline
The line dividing the service courts into left (odd) and right (even) halves.
Shots & Techniques
Dink
A soft, controlled shot hit just over the net into the opponent's kitchen.
Third Shot Drop
A soft shot hit on the third shot of the rally to land in the opponent's kitchen, allowing the serving team to move forward.
Erne
An advanced volley hit from outside the court near the net post, bypassing the kitchen zone.
Drive
A hard, flat shot aimed at the opponent's body or feet.
Lob
A high, arcing shot hit over the opponent's head to push them back.
Volley
Hitting the ball out of the air before it bounces.
Overhead / Smash
A powerful shot hit above the head, usually to put away a high lob.
Drop Shot
Any soft shot designed to land in the kitchen area and force the opponent forward.
Punch Volley
A firm, short volley hit with a compact punching motion at the kitchen line.
Serve
The underhand shot that starts each rally, hit diagonally into the opponent's service court.
Return of Serve
The second shot of the rally — the receiving team's response to the serve.
Rules & Scoring
Two-Bounce Rule
The serve and the return must each bounce once before either team can volley.
Rally Scoring
A scoring system where either team can score on any rally, not just when serving.
Side Out
A loss of serve — the serve transfers to the other team (or the next server in doubles).
Fault
A rule violation that ends the rally — hitting out of bounds, into the net, or volleying from the kitchen.
Let
A serve that clips the net and lands in the correct service court — played as a live ball (no replay).
Dead Ball
When play stops after a fault, before the next serve.
Strategy & Tactics
Stacking
A doubles positioning strategy where partners line up on the same side to keep their stronger sides in play.
Shake and Bake
A doubles play where one player drives the third shot hard while their partner crashes the net to put away the next ball.
Poach
Crossing in front of your partner to intercept a ball intended for them.
ATP (Around the Post)
Hitting the ball around the outside of the net post instead of over the net — a legal and highlight-reel shot.
Skinny Singles
A singles practice format played on only half the court (diagonally).
General Terms
Rally
The continuous back-and-forth play after the serve until a fault occurs.
Paddle
The solid-faced racquet used in pickleball, made from composite, graphite, or wood.
