Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone)

The 7-foot zone on each side of the net where volleys are not allowed.

The kitchen — officially called the non-volley zone (NVZ) — is a 7-foot area on each side of the net. It's the most unique rule in pickleball and the one that gives beginners the most trouble.

The rule is simple: you cannot hit the ball out of the air (volley) while standing in the kitchen or touching the kitchen line. This prevents players from camping at the net and smashing every ball — it forces strategic, finesse-based play.

Kitchen Rules

What You Can't Do

  • Volley (hit the ball out of the air) while any part of your body is touching the kitchen or kitchen line
  • Let your momentum carry you into the kitchen after hitting a volley — even if you were behind the line when you hit it
  • Drop anything into the kitchen during or after a volley (paddle, hat, sunglasses, phone)
  • Have your partner hold you back to prevent you from entering the kitchen after a volley

What You Can Do

  • Stand in the kitchen at any time — you just can't volley from there
  • Hit a ball that has bounced while standing in the kitchen
  • Step into the kitchen after a groundstroke (a ball that bounced first)
  • Enter the kitchen between rallies to retrieve a ball

Why Does the Kitchen Exist?

Without the kitchen, the tallest player with the longest reach would dominate by standing at the net and smashing everything. The kitchen creates a buffer zone that rewards touch, patience, and placement over raw power. It's what makes pickleball accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.

Common Kitchen Mistakes

Watch Out For

  • Toe on the line — your foot doesn't have to be fully inside; touching the line counts
  • Momentum carry — you hit a great volley from behind the line but your forward step lands in the kitchen
  • The paddle drop — your paddle slips and lands in the kitchen after a volley at the net
  • The “I was already here” trap — standing in the kitchen and reflexively volleying a ball aimed at your feet

Pro Tip

Position yourself with your toes just behind the kitchen line — close enough to reach dinks, far enough to avoid faults. This “kitchen line stance” is where most competitive points are won.
